Bullwheel Finite Element Analysis
The
drive bullwheel of the Poma-Otis Detroit Automated People Mover was analyzed
using ALGOR to verify the stresses at the hub ID. This bullwheel is designed to attach to the drive shaft by means
of a Ringfeder internal expanding ring.
The pressure of the locking ring produce radial and tangential stresses
in the hub, which are then combined with the stresses produced by the cable
loads (radial compression and torque).
This was modeled using a combination beam, plate and solid element
model, with cable tension loads applied at the rim and locking ring pressure
loads applied as fixed displacements at the ID of the hub.
The analysis output
showed that even with the loads imposed by locking ring, the material of the
hub was capable of withstanding the stresses which resulted.
