Yan Bullwheel Finite element Analysis

In response to several cases of cracking found at the connection of “donut” plates to the hubs of Yan fixed grip chairlift bullwheels, POL-X West performed detailed 3-D and 2-D Finite Element Analyses of various bullwheel types to determine which were at risk and which were safe to remain in service.  The models were created in CADKEY and translated into ALGOR for processing.

 

 

 

The 3-D model was used to establish the local forces in the welds of the “donut” plates to the hubs.  These forces were then used in the 2-D analysis to analyze the stresses in greater detail.  The resulting stresses were then compared to ASTM weld fatigue limits and the recommendations for future use of the bullwheel established based on whether or not the stresses were within allowable limits.  In each case, the worst theoretical case of weld configuration was used to insure conservative results.
