Jasper Tramway Terminal and Tower Finite Element Analysis

 

The upgrade of the Jasper Tramway begun in 2000 by Garaventa AG required the verification of the structure of the upper terminal and tower to insure the loads of the new system did not cause the structures to be overstressed.  POL-X West was asked to provide a finite element analysis (FEA) of the structures and identify any areas which may need to be reinforced due to the change in loading.

 

POL-X West used ALGOR finite element software to perform this analysis.  The tower and upper terminal were modeled using beam elements for the structural members and plate elements for built-up components such as saddles, and for enclosure surfaces such as walls and roofs.  Localized loads were modeled as point forces while snow, wind, and distributed cable loads were modeled as pressure loads on the appropriate surfaces.  In this way, several load cases were created which accurately simulated the various combinations of loads which would be expected by the structure.
